ROAD
Modern road networks mean that Portugalete can be reached by dual carriageway from anywhere in Spain or Europe. The A8 Autovía (dual carriageway) links up with the A68 Autopista (motorway). The E70 joins the A8 in the direction of Santander, although use may also be made of the secondary road BI-3739. The N1 Autovía (Madrid-Irún), which links Bilbao to Madrid, is the main road artery leading to the South. For those coming from the Mediterranean, the quickest direct route is by motorway, the Autopista Vasco Aragonesa (E 805). There is a dual carriageway, the AutovíadelCantábrico, connecting Vizcaya with the rest of Spain's northern coastline. Vizcaya is connected to Europe by the Bilbao-Behobia motorway (E70).
