THE MANSION OF MANUEL CALVO

Palacio de Manuel Calvo Born in Portugalete in 1816, Manuel Calvo y Aguirre was an indiano who amassed a fortune in Cuba and became an important businessman. He commissioned the building of his summer residence in his hometown.

Occupying the first plot on the quayside, the Muelle Nuevo, the mansion was designed in a colonial style with Neoclassical and regional influences. In his will, he left the house to the Town on the condition that it was converted into a café-hotel and that any profit made should be used to alleviate the hardships of the town's poorer citizens.

The mansion was razed by fire in 1993. After years of building work, it was finally inaugurated in 2002 as the "Gran Hotel Puente Colgante".
