THE TRANSPORTER BRIDGE - PUENTE VIZCAYA

Vista del Puente Colgante This impressive piece of civil engineering, known as the Puente Colgante, was inaugurated on the 28th July 1893 and links Portugalete with the municipality of Getxo, on the right bank of the river estuary.

In view of the need to connect both banks without hindering the heavy shipping traffic along the river, the architect Alberto Palacio was charged with seeking a solution.

The Puente Colgante, an exponent of Iron Architecture, was a revolutionary concept at the time. It was the first of its kind in the world and is now the only one remaining in operation. Its suspension span, running to a length of 160 metres, is supported at each end by two towers rising to a height of 61 metres. In 1937, during the Civil War, the span fell into the estuary after explosive charges were placed, and the bridge remained out of service until it was rebuilt in 1941.

The latest modification took place in 1999, when the movable carriage was replaced for the fourth time; panoramic lifts were also installed providing access to an upper walkway that is open to visitors, an original idea by Alberto Palacio.
