The statue of Víctor Chavarri, by the sculptor Miguel Blay, was awarded the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1905, in recognition of its quality and beauty.

The sculpture standing on the Canilla promenade symbolises the struggle of both men and women to make the river estuary navigable, the source of life and the economy in Portugalete.
